Prompt engineering for teachers
Prompt engineering is the art of giving AI clear instructions to get useful results. For a teacher, the difference between an improvised prompt and a well-structured one is the difference between a generic answer and material that is ready for the classroom. What a prompt is (and why it matters)
A prompt is the instruction you give an AI tool. The same tool can give you a mediocre or an excellent answer depending on how you ask. Learning to write prompts is the highest-return skill for a teacher starting with AI: it improves results without changing tools.
The RACE framework, in short
RACE organizes a good prompt into four components:
- Role.You tell the AI what role to take on: for example, «act as a middle-school science teacher».
- Action.The concrete task: «generate five multiple-choice questions».
- Context.The information the AI needs: grade, subject, learning objective, students' level.
- Expectations. How you want the result: format, length, tone and even examples of the desired style.
By including all four, the result stops being generic and gets close to something usable in your class. This is a summary; the full path includes lessons and evaluated practice.
A good prompt is iterated, not nailed on the first try
Writing prompts is a process: you ask, review the result and adjust. If the answer isn't useful, it almost always lacks context or precision in the expectations. Refining the instruction is faster than redoing the work by hand, and over time you build a library of prompts you reuse.
